Ferric C. Fang, M.D. is a Professor of Laboratory Medicine, Microbiology and Medicine at the University of Washington. He is a clinician-scientist and molecular microbiologist with thirty years’ experience studying bacterial genetics and pathogenesis. Prof. Fang served as Editor-in-Chief of the ASM journal Infection and Immunity for 10 years and is currently Deputy Editor of the IDSA journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. In collaboration with his colleague Arturo Casadevall, Prof. Fang has authored a series of articles on the nature of the contemporary scientific enterprise and opportunities for reform. In 2012 he was the lead author of an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that analyzed more than 2,000 retracted research articles in the life sciences literature.
Dishonest research practices threaten the integrity of the scientific enterprise. This lecture will examine the problem of research misconduct, focusing on retracted publications in the scientific literature. The underlying factors contributing to the recent apparent increase in misconduct will be discussed, along with potential strategies for reform.
