The UBC Department of Microbiology and Immunology hosts an outreach event, the Day of Immunology on Friday April 26 2019, a designated day to bring immunology to the public. UBC scientists and graduate students in the Life Sciences Institute on UBC's Point Grey Campus volunteer each year to give students an hour and a half long presentation with hands on activity. Objectives for the session are to teach students about the microbial world that is around and within us, that the body has a natural defense system to these microbes, and how we can better protect ourselves, for example by hand washing and inhibiting disease spread. All activities are designed for students in grades 5-6. Activities are entirely safe for all students; including viewing common microbes under a microscope, trying to collect bacteria from objects, and visualizing microbe transmission. There is no cost for this visit. Schools are responsible for arranging their own travel to and from UBC Life Sciences Institute. Only 30 students per school can be hosted at a time. If you are interested in this outreach field trip please fill out an online application form by Friday February 1, 2019 and three schools will be selected by Tuesday February 12th 2019.
