Congratulations to Jacqueline Siu!
We are very pleased to announce that one of our M&I undergraduate majors, Jacqueline Siu, is one of 20 students across all UBC undergraduate programs to receive the Wesbrook award!
Jacqueline was recognized as a Wesbrook scholar and awarded the Harold B. & Nellie Boyes Memorial, and the Harry Logan Memorial Premier scholarship. These awards are the University’s most prestigious designations and are given to senior undergraduate students with outstanding academic performance, leadership, and involvement in student and community activities.
Jacqueline is currently a fourth year BSc. Honours Microbiology & Immunology student, and an undergraduate researcher in Dr. Neil Cashman's research group. She was previously awarded the Ivan Beck Memorial Award as the top ranked applicant in the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology Summer Studentship competition for her work with Dr. Megan Levings on a potential Crohn's Disease immunotherapy.
Beyond the bench, Jacqueline was recognized as one of the eight UBC SLC's Faces of Today for her unique perspective and involvement in various student communities. She started an undergraduate journal club to encourage different approaches to student learning, and she is also a biology teaching assistant for the Science One program. As the co-president of the Undergraduate Research Opportunities club (www.uroubc.ca), she expanded URO's Research EXperience program to include unprecedented new fields of research and supported the creation of a fully-funded travel grant to Harvard's National Collegiate Research Conference. In addition, Jacqueline founded the Shine On Music club that strives to provide free improvisation-based music lessons to inner-city elementary students. In her free time, Jacqueline publishes articles about her undergraduate experiences, and composes & produces YouTube videos.
She also received the Cambridge International Scholarship (https://www.gatescambridge.org/our-scholars/new-scholars), a full scholarship for her PhD studies at Cambridge. She will be starting this exciting journey in October 2016.
